FACTBOX: Global writedowns and credit losses
(Reuters) - British bank Barclays Plc (BARC.L: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a 33 percent drop in first-half profits as it took a 2 billion pound ($3.9 billion) write-down on the value of risky assets, but the profit drop was not as steep as expected.
Below is a summary of around $400 billion of credit-related write-downs and losses recorded by major institutions since the credit crunch hit in the third quarter of 2007.
